Philosophy in Montréal

Montréal is an ideal location to be a philosopher. The French-speaking North American city of Montréal is a meeting place for the analytic and continental traditions, which are represented at four university philosophy departments: two English (McGill and Concordia) and two French (UQAM and Université de Montréal).

Philosophy in Montréal is not just the concern of a single department. Montréal’s four philosophy departments bring together internationally renowned specialists in each of the discipline’s fields. There is a well-established tradition of partnership between the departments, as demonstrated by the organization of joint colloquiums, seminars and reading groups. There are also several research teams bringing together professors and students from the different departments. Joint activities include the Montreal Political Theory Workshop, the Montreal Early Modern Round Table, and the Institute in Cognitive Sciences. Most Montréal philosophers also participate in the activities and conferences of the Canadian Philosophical Association  and the Société de philosophie du Québec.

Montréal’s proximity to cities like Toronto, Boston and New York make it much easier for Montréal philosophers to participate in philosophical events held in those centres.
